tv   News 3 Live at Noon  NBC  October 6, 2016 12:00pm-12:30pm PDT

12:00 pm
the hurricane inches closer to the u.s. >> michelle: these are live pictures as we watch this monster make its way towards the u.s. it's claimed more than 100 lives in the caribbean. news 3 is your weather authority. let's get to it. you have been tracking the storm. when you look at the pictures behind me you can see it's going to have a massive affect on that state. >> kelly: yeah. they're already feeling the affects. i have been texting some of my friends that are there throughout the morning hours and they're telling me that they're already starting to feel it. the winds are stag we're going to look first at the radar imagery where you can still see the storm cycling around heading its way closer and closer. right now matthew is at a category 4 level. it's 140 miles per hour sustained winds. it's moving northwest at about 14 miles per hour. so it's going to be making its way towards us getting closer. as you can see the outer bands already lashing toward the coastline. miami, fort pierce, fort lauderdale, tampa as well
12:01 pm
even fort myers getting in it on. making their way from east to west across the area. i want to look at the track of this storm here. here we are right now. category 4 storm. it's moving toward free port, bahamas, then making its way closer to land where it could make a landfall just to the south of jacksonville, maybe around st. augustine. that's somewhere we're watching. notice, it's not losing much strength according to the forecast models. expected to stay category 4. wall replacement cycle where it collapses in on itself and regenerates. if it goes the right, that's great news. that means the coastlines these tropical-storm-force winds. if it goes more left, that's when we're going to see some of the most damage. when this starts making its way on shore. it continues to travel its way to the north. it's going to hook its way east. so georgia, south carolina definitely feel something of this. but now watch what happens.
12:02 pm
but it's coming back around for florida again. this time as a tropical storm, possibly even a tropical depression. but regardless, the fact they're going to be doing a lot of clean up in florida. here at home, conditions obviously much, much quieter. we're going to get into that in a few minutes. >> krystal: terrific job tracking that storm. again, live images out of orlando, florida as the storm makes its way there. a catey have correspondents on the scene as it inches closer. >> reporter: boarding up, stocking up, and moving out. millions from the sunshine state and the carolinas race to get out of the way as hurricane matthew inches closer and closer to the u.s. >> time is running out. don't take a chance. >> reporter: mandatory evacuations extend from florida through south carolina. >> if you have not evacuated,

12:04 pm
atlantic. sarah rosario, nbc news, daytona beach, florida. >> michelle: as we continue to watch matthew barrel towards the u.s. or up towards the u.s. we just got word not too long ago that disney world has actually decided to shut down entirely for the weekend. they were planning to open hopefully by monday but that depends on whether there was a lot of damage done there at the park in orlando. but this >> krystal: they're not playing around. to give you perspective. if you rewind a few years back hurricane katrina hit as a category 3 and it was devastating. so this is a category 4 so they're not taking any chances. you heard the governor say, this storm will kill you. >> michelle: we're going to keep dipping in and giving you updates because this is changing as we go. we want to give you local news. this is something that all of us need to keep in mind. voter registration drives in
12:05 pm
apparently getting letters telling them that they're not registered to vote. but in fact, they are. >> krystal: this is something that you need to pay attention to. news 3's craig fiegener is live with the warning for you this afternoon for voters. what do we need to know? you think you are registered then find out you are not. >> craig: well you find out that you've got a letter which strongly suggests that maybe you are not registered. that's what's happening. these letters have been sent out many thousands of them all in fact, all across the state of nevada. it's created so much concern that elections officials have issued an official statement saying be on the lookout for this. that statement to the media to deliver to voters. that's why this story is so important for you at the noon hour here. you are about to see letters that the secretary of state elections officials believe are misleading voters. nevada elections officials say people are confused by official
12:06 pm
the mass mailings encourage people to register, often claiming they aren't registered to vote. but the mailing list was never compared to clark county's registration records. >> we tried to work with most of these groups who contacted us about this mailer and let them know we could bounce their database against ours and identify those people registered, deceased or underaged and ineligible to vote. we got complaints from people for instance a 13-year-old son problems. for example the letter puzzled lee. she's been registered since roosevelt was a website. john treanor showed her what appears to be behind nevada votes 2016. it has no connection to a government agency but its website has pro trump links. >> it takes you to another website. this website is a website that talks a lot about donald trump. >> reporter: the registration deadline is coming,
12:07 pm
votes 2016 mailers will make registered voters think they're not registered and not vote. and with mailers going to dead people and some under 18, there's a potential of fueling claims of voter fraud. back here live. do you think your registered? are you sure? if you need to know you can check from any computer. the clark county registrar of voters allows for voter registration confirmation cck live, news 3. >> krystal: important information to pass along. thank you so much craig for that. >> michelle: you only have a few more days to register to vote online or at the dmv. these are important deadlines you need to know about here. so saturday, that deadline hits. it means you can't do it anymore online. from october 9th through the 18th, you can still sign up. but you will have to go to a county elections office in person. early voting starts, by the way, october 22nd.
12:08 pm
only see here on news 3. donald trump stopping in henderson for a rally. that happened yesterday. we had live pictures of that happening during our noon broadcast yesterday. then our jim snyder had the chance to sit down and talk with the republican nominee one-on-one. they talked for about trump's stance on the proposed nuclear waste dump at yucca mountain and jim found out that trump does not have one yet. >> reporter: you are a proponent of more nuclear power plants around the none in nevada. why should we have to store the waste 90 miles from here in a city that draws 40 million tourists a year. >> reporter: . >> as you know i'm very friendly with this area. i have big enterprises here, especially my building. and the hotel, trump international. i will tell you, i'm going to look at it. so many people are talking about it. >> reporter: got an idea. take the nuclear waste and bury it under the wall and nobody will come close to it. what do you think?
12:09 pm
here it would hurt the tourism industry. people would be afraid of it. do you share that concern. >> number one you have to worry about safety. it's a little close to a very major population base. so i will take a very strong look at it and come strongly one way or the other and i will have an opinion. >> michelle: all right. there you are. jim had an interesting idea. >> krystal: and he got a chuckle out of donald trump too. from the second debate. because we have football here on news 3 sunday night we will have you covered. you can catch that presidential debate on our sister station, the cw las vegas. it's going to start at 6:00 p.m. if you are wondering what channel that is, that is channel 33. or if you have cox cable channel six. and after that debate, we want you to join us online monday. we're going to have analysis from the experts helping you break down what you heard during
12:10 pm
4:00 p.m. monday on our website. tune in at >> michelle: a special session to consider an increase in the hotel room tax which would help pay for the new football stadium. that's going to get underway monday. the plan recommended by the infrastructure committee relies on $750 million of public money raised through a hike on the hotel room tax. the rest would be paid for privately. governor sandoval is also directing lawmakers to consider tweaking that tax increase to education funding. we want to let you know that we plan on being there for this entire special session. our coverage begins sunday evening live from carson city. jeff gillan will be there with live reports. >> krystal: there's another alleged clown incident that we reported on in the las vegas area yesterday involving a middle school and ccsd police. they are addressing this. clark county school district police that is. so they will hold a press
12:11 pm
and that's in regard to yesterday's precautionary lockdown of bridger middle school. that's in north las vegas -- after reports of shots fired. and then we had some students apparently receiving threatening text messages with a clown's picture in the sender box. so that's the clown connection there. north las vegas police say they were not able to substantiate the gunfire reports and they weren't able to make any connection to those clowns. but we're sending our crew there an school district police say. >> michelle: this is something they're just not going to play around with. especially when there's reports of shots fired near a school. in one of my good friends is a teacher there and she was texting me saying we're under our desks right now do you know what's going on? >> krystal: it's frightening. >> michelle: absolutely. firefighters dealing with two wildfires at mount charleston today. coming up, why firefighters say one of the fires is really hard to put out. >> krystal: and a little kitty

"news 3 live at noon" will be back after this. keep an eye on hurricane matthew. a category 4 storm barreling its way towards florida. the president declaring a state of emergency in florida. they're not messing around with this storm. our kelly curran is all over it. we are your weather authority. "news 3 live at noon" is back on
12:13 pm
i'm one of the lucky ones. i had breast cancer, but they caught it in time. there are many women who depend on planned parenthood for that kind of screening and care. so i'll never understand politicians like congressman heck, who tried to defund planned parenthood. he was even willing to shut down the government over it. heck was opposed to roe v. wade it's just wrong, it doesn't help anybody. congressman heck does not share my values. dscc is responsible for the content of this advertising. jacky rosen: i'm jacky rosen, and as a computer programmer, i created apps... before they were called "apps" and i learned there's always a smart solution. as president of my synagogue, we found a smart solution to rising energy costs... creating one of the largest solar projects in the state.
12:14 pm
to improve our schools, and create good jobs. i approved this message because i know we can find smart solutions... even in washington. ray steiber: i was in charge of homicide. i know when something's not right. the attacks on question 1 are wrong. question 1 protects the right of law abiding nevadans to bear arms. carry. hunt. protection. it's all there. doesn't change. and no one goes to jail for swapping guns while hunting or at the shooting range. or go online and buy guns without background checks. that will save lives. yes on 1.
12:15 pm
>> michelle: welcome back. we're continuing to monitor these live pictures of the florida coastline where you can see that people are not heeding the warnings. they're taking a leisurely stroll as a cat four hurricane is making its way. this looks like the bahamas
12:16 pm
there. also haiti hit hard. i think the last total was more than 20 people -- >> krystal: more than 100 people in the caribbean. >> michelle: okay. so far this storm has taken more than 100 lives. and it is not over yet. as kelly pointed out, after it's waking its way past the u.s. it's going to possibly hook back around and come down for round two. so this is a big deal we're continuing to follow over on the east coast. we'll bring you more updates a >> krystal: okay. on to this. >> michelle: this makes my heart stop. >> krystal: heart in throat. so this is a kitty on a ledge some 12 stories high! i promise, this has a really good ending. they were able to corral that kitty. look at him. oh my goodness. with a pole. they were able to pull that
12:17 pm
they had police officers on the bottom just in case he went the opposite direction. they wanted to make sure that kitty had a good ending. >> michelle: all right. houston police investigating a shooting that happened this morning at a local hospital after a man threatened somebody with a knife. police say the person shot was the suspect. a man identified only as a prisoner from the harris county jail who went to the general hospital for medical issues. grabbed a weapon and tried to attack a doctor. a deputy ordered the man to drop that weapon when he refused the deputy shot him and injured him. the suspect was then rushed in to surgery. we have no information on his -- how he is doing now, his condition. also whether anybody else was hurt. >> krystal: three people found dead in what police are calling a murder/suicide in oregon. that story will come back to later but let's talk about this right now. a late season surprise for
12:18 pm
mary jane falls in kyle canyon. the first one started sunday. the second one, the trail fire, started early yesterday morning. the u.s. forest service says while firefighters are actively working a small fire from yesterday the original fire from sunday is another story. yesterday helicopter brought in to dump water. although penetrateing the tree canopy he says this is going to be kind of >> one up top, the lost fire, is inaccessible to people. it's unsafe. it's way too steep and rugged. it is uncommon for us to be getting fires like this in october. >> krystal: for now all trails near the fire remain open while firefighters monitor its progress from down below. chances are the lost fire will burn itself out. >> michelle: that's good news. because we do not want a repeat of what happened with the
12:19 pm
>> krystal: they had to do a lot to replenish that area. kelly you have been all over this last couple days tracking this hurricane matthew. boy, it is massive. >> kelly: it definitely is. unfortunately, with those fires in mount charleston, we don't have rain in the forecast. at least not until monday. so we hope maybe we can get rain and help get the fires put out mother nature's way right? here at home it is beautiful blue sky. we've been talking so much about what's going on in florida. we want to take a look at what we're seeing here at this is the southeast career and technical academy camera. beautiful blue skies this morning. high, thin clouds. that's been about it. now temperatures. this morning it was warmer than what we've been seeing. but right now it's definitely cooler. look at these numbers. sunrise right now it's noon. it's only 76. lakes 73. if you want to have lunch elfresco today you want to bring a sweater with you. green valley 74.
12:20 pm
whole lot to talk about. for us it's nothing but sunshine. it's going to stay that way tomorrow. we do have a disturbance on the way but it's not until the beginning of next week. so let's shift gears and talk about hurricane matthew. again, category 4 storm, sustained winds at 140 miles per hour. that's the latest update. it may go through an eye wall replacement cycle. that would be a good thing. because that would actually knock down those winds if the storm kind of collapses that will actually maybe weaken it a bit. that would be something good we're watching here. zooming in closer and you can see the bands coming on shore, west palm beach, fort lauderdale, miami all getting hit. where you are seeing shades of yellow and orange, that's indicating heavier rain. then those hurricane force waves, they're extending 60 miles out from the core of the storm. it's not just the eye that we're concerned about, it's the outer-bands too.
12:21 pm
over freeport bahamas pretty soon. we're watching that as it heads, again, toward the florida coastline. forecast for us today? we just wish everybody in florida could visit us right? fantastic weather. we've got sunshine, 80. that's our expected high. winds north five to 15. tonight great sleeping weather, 58 degrees. clear skies. our 7-day forecast? temperatures aren't going to be warming up this weekend. 86 degrees, mostly sunny for saturday. 88 on sunday. if your pool is still maybe, right. then monday there is a chance for rain in our forecast, especially in the higher terrain. good news for those fires. let's cross our fingers and hope we can get rain out of this in our local mountains. >> krystal: fight it mother nature's way. >> michelle: i am loving those overnights. it's nice to turn off the a.c. finally. a special throwback thursday. so we want to see all of your throwback thursday pictures.
12:22 pm

12:23 pm
i'm one of the lucky ones. i had breast cancer, but they caught it in time. there are many women who depend on planned parenthood for that kind of screening and care. so i'll never understand politicians like congressman heck, who tried to defund planned parenthood. he was even willing to shut down the government over it. heck was opposed to roe v. wade and tried to criminalize abortion. that's just shameful, it's just wrong, it doesn't help anybody.
12:24 pm
ray steiber: i was in charge of homicide. i know when something's not right. the attacks on question 1 are wrong. question 1 protects the right of law abiding nevadans to bear arms. carry. hunt. protection. it's all there. doesn't change. and no one goes to jail for swapping guns while hunting or at the shooting range. what changes is convicted felons can't run to a gun show or go online and buy guns without background checks. that will save lives.
12:25 pm
there's the nevada way. work hard. play by the rules. pay your taxes. and then there's the danny tarkanian way. penalized for failing to pay thousands in property taxes. ordered by a judge to repay $17 million in a failed development scheme. worse, tarkanian refused to pay it back, sticking taxpayers with the bill. the danny tarkanian way? the wrong way for nevada. t of this advertising. >> krystal: we are taking you way back. back in to time. it's throwback thursday. we want to see your pictures.
12:26 pm
>> michelle: these are the pictures we've been showing. this the one i shared from two years ago. if you are a fan of "news 3 live at noon," you probably saw this live. then we have -- this is brad. our photographer. isn't he funny. then here's jeff maher. you will recognize his face. and we have to say our newest reporter faith. it's her b happy birthday faith. keep sending in your pictures. when i was one year old, i was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer on my spinal chchord. but i spent my whole life fighting back. so you can imagine what i thought when i saw donald trump say... "i don't know what i said, ah, i don't remember!" "that reporter he is talking about suffers from a chronic condition that impairs movement of his arms." i don't want a president who makes fun of me.
12:28 pm
as a marine combat veteran, i understand the sacrifices our military makes. our benefits are earned, and we rely on them. politicians like joe heck should understand that. narrator: joe heck voted to shut down the federal government, risking critical services for nevada veterans. and during that shutdown, heck continued cashing his congressional paycheck. his military record deserves respect. but back in dc, joe heck is putting politics before nevada. work for me. narrator: vote vets is responsible for the content
